How I designed a Home Rental App

  • They are moving out for higher studies.
  • Job relocation.
  • Decrease their commute and find a place near their office, school etc
  • Alone
  • With their friends, partners or acquaintances to save up on rent while having a familiar company.
  • With their families.
  • Budget-friendly
  • Close-by or well connected to their frequently visited destination like; office, school, coaching etc.
  • Decent locality with well-connected and accessible modes of commute, supermarkets, restaurants, malls etc.
  • Places with desirable or useful amenities like; parking lot, wifi etc.
  • Users don’t want to pay an agent everytime they want to visit an apartment which will most likely turn out horrible.
  • Users can look at multiple properties through a screen while literally slouching over a couch.
  • Users can look through properties at their convenience (even in the middle of the night if they please) without having to spare time to schedule a meeting with an agent.
  • Pictures shown on the app can be deceiving. The property looks nothing like the pictures in reality.
  • The credibility of an app becomes an issue.
  • Certain features of the apps are so confusing that users get frustrated and give up mid-way.
  • Users don’t want to share their personal details on the app to avoid being pestered by phone calls from property dealers, agents, landlords etc.

  1. As it was my first time, I struggled with getting this project done quicker; it took me 2 months to get this research work done.
  2. There were times where I didn’t know what to do. I needed guidance and did more research
  3. Talking to people was more difficult than I expected, as people may not want to talk or feel reluctant in giving you the answers that you actually need.
  4. There were lots of back and forth in my designs and research methods.
  1. As a first timer, this project has helped strengthen my UI/UX skills
  2. I like the idea of proper documentation of my processes
  3. I believe there is no single perfect answer for a design challenge, so the best approach for me is to test it out. Test with your colleagues, friends, family members and learn as much as you can from real users. Filter their feedback so you don’t overthink a solution.
  4. Nothing beats proper research and that process is very important
