Any Given (Sun)Day

Any Given Sunday came out in 1999, not the greatest movies I’ve ever watched, I have to admit. It features a great cast like LL Cool J, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, and the legendary Al Pacino. Al happens to be one of my favorite actors of all time, and in this movie he plays a character of Tony D’Amato, a football team coach who has fallen out of favor with the young team owner Christina Pagniacci, a character played by Cameron Diaz. On the other hand he is trying to resuscitate a once great football team.

The highlight of the movie is the motivational talk the coach gave to the team before the playoffs. I listen to this motivational talk at least once a day as a reminder that life, as in business, is a game of inches. Here’s the speech…

“…life is a game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don’t quite make it. One half a second too slow, too fast, you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us, they’re in every break of the game, every minute, every second…

On this team, we fight for that inch, on this team we tear ourselves, and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch, because we know when we add up all those inches, that’s gonna make the fcuking difference between winning and losing, between living and dying…”

Jim Rohn once said “success is a sum of daily habits practiced everyday”. A chocolate a day doesn’t seem like a big deal but after 30, 60, or 90 days you will feel the effect, the same can be said of daily disciplines.

Life is a game of inches, any given (sun)day…

Go forth and fight for that inch.
