Title: .0 out of 5 stars World building for fun

Review: I will never publish, I am writing for my own pleasure. I want to write what I would enjoy reading and not find myself jerked out of the story and shaking my head “What?!?”
This series goes into details on how to make your world and its inhabitants feel real and logical in the way it all fits together. I am reading slowly and taking time to use what I learn and having a wonderful time building a world and its cultures to make my story better.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 1, 2020
Review: I am absolutely delighted to have discovered the first two volumes of a brilliant series of worldbuilding how-to books by Randy Ellefson called The Art of Worldbuilding. The first volume, Creating Life, is all about how to design sentient species, animals, heroes, and monsters with which to fill your worlds. As a player of D&D and Pathfinder role-playing games, I didn’t think much of it at first; after all, it was pretty much de rigueur to have humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, etc., but it was still good stuff to know. I immediately revised my opinion dramatically upward once I was in the position of having to populate my own game setting, as Creating Life is chock-full of good advice and aspects to consider when designing sentient and non-sentient species for a game or story setting.

Instead, it was the second volume, Creating Places, which gained my immediate appreciation and enthusiasm. Creating Places starts with planetary systems and moons, continues with continents, land features, kingdoms and governments, settlements of various sizes. It also discusses travel times, how to create histories, and how to make places memorable and interesting.

Throughout both books run several common threads: Keep it believable; create only a little more detail than you think you’ll need (after all, telling your story should be your focus); develop those aspects first in which your interest is strongest, don’t make yourself do unpleasant things in the hope of getting to the good things later; it’s okay to borrow heavily from your Earthly experience (but don’t copy wholesale); use unexpected (but non-trivial) details to keep things memorable, but don’t make them so different from human experience that they require lengthy (and tedious) exposition.

As to what sources like these give you that you couldn’t get from any old game master’s guide, the brief answer is “believability”. The D&D GM guide will give you tables for rolling random terrain types. Creating Places will tell you why deserts are where they are and why the forests thickly cover the opposite side of the mountains, why the ocean currents move as they do, why the trade winds blow in the direction they do. The D&D GM guide will give you tables for rolling random government types. Creating Places will tell you what specific kinds of government are likely to follow a monarchy, and why, and what form of government is likely to succeed them. If you want your readers, your viewers, or your players’ characters, to truly live in your world, worldbuilding is the way to go, not an idiotic collection of random tables.

Whether you’re an author, gamer, filmmaker, or comic artist, or simply enjoy using your imagination to create new worlds, I highly recommend these books, and am eagerly anticipating the third volume, Cultures and Beyond, expected to be published in early 2020.

Review: I am a writer by hobby and I wanted to take my dream of writing my first novel very seriously. I ordered two of the three books in this series, and let me tell you how helpful these have been. I HIGHLY recommend these books fot worldbuilders who are beginners or experienced. The Templates in the books are tremendous for flushing out details you might not have though of. Great series!!

Review: This book dose provide helpful information about the subject of world building, but I can’t help the feeling I get that it’s is about selling the authors fictional world more than teaching about a subject. Not saying that there is not some valuable gems within its pages. Just that the reason for the book regardless of any valuable information found within. Was designed mostly for the purpose of selling you on their own world that the author built.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars It is as advertised and is good.

Review: Arrived in mail on what has just become yesterday. Have read introduction and skimmed through book here and there. Have had some interaction with author on Google Plus and therefore had a good idea what contents were like. It is as advertised and is good. The one and only complaint is physical — for me the paperback is too narrow in proportion to its thickness. I would have a far easier time handling it if it were an inch wider at 6 instead of 5 inches wide. Now admittedly that is wrapped up in my multiple health problems and probably unique to me but it is interfering with my use of the book. (and no, electronic formats won’t make it easier for me, been there tried them, so don’t you future commenters waste both our time suggesting them) Is solely on account of the awkward physical size issue that I didn’t give all five stars.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Far more useful for those wanting to write a book rather than a game
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 30, 2019
Review: The way this book helped me was largely in the areas where technical details about planets were explained in terms I could understand, as well as the number of variable subjects involved with world-building that were covered and the added examples provided for them (another part of what helped me understand what I was working with). The templates included gave me an idea of how to go about structuring the information compiled in documents about my created/fictional worlds. It’s also directed towards a literary audience, one of Fantasy and Science Fiction writers, as opposed to technical manuals for world-building from pen/paper RPGs, which are directed towards those wanting to design a game (as several writers in said genres are also gamers).

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Another great resource for world building

Review: Just like his first book in this series, I reference this book often. Once your characters are created, they need to exist in a world that feels real, logical and believable to the reader. This book helps with what you may consider the logistics of world building. Creating continents, land features, proper travel times by foot, horse, ship and more. Like Creating Life, this book is also organized in a manner that is easy to just go to the sections you need. A great companion to his first book.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Really useful reference books
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 19, 2018
Review: Great books — I got both this one and Creating Life. I simply stumbled upon both books online when looking for something about plotting, and I bought them both, and am glad I did. I’m a fairly experienced writer in literary genres, but fantasy/sci-fi are different. This book was immediately useful as I was creating a land ringed with tall mountains, and I wondered about rainfall — this book answered my question about how mountains effect rainfall! It’s not like you couldn’t look some of this stuff up in other ways, but having it all in one place was very useful to me. I’d highly recommend both books in this series.
