  Title: Author is essentially defending murder

  Review: This author is one of the foremost authorities on guncraft. If one studies firearms, self-defense, combat tactics, etc., you will not be able to avoid coming across material produced by him.
  Unfortunately, his credibility is seriously damaged by this book. First, in the way it is written, and second, in his gushing adoration of child killer George Zimmerman.
• A whole chapter is dedicated to Trayvon Martin’s killing at the hands of vigilante gun-wielding lunatic George Zimmerman. Zimmerman initiated a confrontation with an innocent kid who was walking to the store, and he ended up killing him. The victim, Trayvon Martin, is depicted as a drug addict who was trying to buy guns illegally, which, even if true, is completely irrelevant to his killing. There is even a picture in the book showing how tall Trayvon was, i.e., he’s very dangerous so deserves to be shot.
  We know that Zimmerman was stalking Trayvon, and was chasing him around. If Trayvon attacked Zimmerman did he do so because he just likes to run around randomly attacking people? Or could he have been terrified because he (correctly) believed that he was being stalked by a lunatic with a gun? Of course we’ll never know for sure because Zimmerman conveniently murdered the one witness who could tell his story.
  The author expends great energy expressing sympathy with Zimmerman, and none with Trayvon. He doesn’t seem to show any sorrow that a life was lost. There is no post mortem on what could have been done differently. Zimmerman was right, he says, to “get involved” and on p. 147 he has the audacity to equate this pathetic vigilante cop wannabe with firefighters who risk their lives by rushing into burning buildings.
• But it’s not just that. The book is written in the same way that a poorly educated person would write a Facebook post arguing their political point. People who don’t love George Zimmerman are referred to as “haters,” and at one point he uses the acronym “MSM” without explaining it. (It means “mainstream media,” and is mostly used by people who get all their information about the world from talk radio).
  At one point, he quotes Wikipedia at length. Wait a second. Isn’t he supposed to be the foremost authority on this topic? Why is he quoting a web page that anyone can edit? Your book is supposed to be a source for Wikipedia, not the other way around.
• Summary: there aren’t many people who have the background and expertise this author does. But keep looking and searching for information because I find it difficult to place unquestioning faith in what he says in his book.

• There are many experts who can teach you how to handle your firearm and survive a gunfight, and Massad Ayoob is one of the best.
• But Ayoob was the first man to recognize that when the gunfight is over and you’ve survived, that’s only the beginning of the fight. Mr. Ayoob was the first to address what happens *after* the smoke clears. Everyone else stopped once the bad guy was stopped. But some 36 years ago, in his book “In The Gravest Extreme,” Mr. Ayoob addressed the rest of the story for the first time: The emotional and especially the *legal* aftermath of a self-defense shooting. You survived the attack, now how will you survive the legal process?
• Massad Ayoob covers what happens: The “Mark of Caine” syndrome, the police, the courts, and what you should expect and what you need to do before, in preparation, and after. There is no better authority on the subject. Yet he writes in an accessible, readable, and relatable way; this is no dry academic text. It is backed by his experiences in the field and in the courtroom.
• Now, some “hoplophobes,” as the late, great Colonel Jeff Cooper called them, might argue that this is a book about how to get away with murder. That couldn’t be further from the truth. If anything, this book is about how *not* to shoot somebody when you shouldn’t. If every gun came with a copy of this book instead of a cheap gun lock, I would argue that more lives would be saved. Seriously.
• If you own a gun and you are looking to learn, buy this book first. In fact, splurge a little and buy In The Gravest Extreme too, and read it first. Everything there is as relevant as the day it was published decades ago. Deadly Force expands upon those concepts and relates them to current events.
• This is an absolute essential, and I give it my very highest recommendation.

• Could easily have been 5+ star if not for some of the powerpoint lecture photographs. I mean how many photographs of Mas as talking head do you need?
• Despite it’s feel as a week-end seminar packaged as a book there is invaluable information here that will save your butt!
• Not tactical know how but a lot about how the law works and what you need to be exposed to in case you’re ever in a shooting situation.
• For instance if you don’t know a bad guy can cover 21 feet in ~2 seconds and beat your head in with a hammer you can “justifiably” use lethal force. Once you are aware of such threats you will have a stronger defense should be dragged to court.
• As with other Massad Ayoob books his style is well suited for the topic. Serious and clear but a knack to keep the pages turning.
• Seems to work fine as a book you can bounce around to discover topics of current interest of read straight through.
• I don’t know of any other volumes that cover such topics for CCW so if you are considering CCW I highly suggest you give this a read.
