I hate to admit it, but I’m a rule-follower. My cooking demonstrates this fact. I have a variety of recipes I follow from my mother, my grandmother, NYT Cooking, and YouTube that I meticulously follow, much to the chagrin of my partner, who is an expert kitchen improviser.

I felt like I was hearing something so familiar, yet revolutionary. In it, Audre Lorde criticizes the white organizers of the conference where she’s speaking for their inability to see the intersections of racial, sexual and gender hierarchies in their activism and in their own practices. In Manhattan, I hopped on a train from Bowling Green to Union Square, transferring to the L train to Williamsburg on an errand. After making my transfer, I sat down and looked up. The entire train was covered in ads for Fiverr.com, “a marketplace for freelance services”.
