Staying Safe “On The Run” : 4 Tips You Need to Know

Today I bought something I never thought I’d have to: Pepper Spray. Here’s why:

If you know me, then you know that I’m a night runner. I’ll take a cool evening over the hot summer humidity any day. But there is a certain amount of cautious that you need to be when you’re a woman running by yourself. The stories that you hear on the news, the tragedies and close calls, really aren’t all that uncommon.

If you know me, then you know I’m a night runner — at least in the summer. I can’t stand the MO heat and humidity, which does nothing but make my already sweat soaked runs unbearable. And most times this penchant for running in the dark isn’t an issue. I wear bright, reflective clothing and keep my phone on me in case of emergencies. That’s safe enough, right?

But just last week I finished up a run at 10:30 pm in the park. As I walked closer to the empty parking lot that held only my car, another car with one lone guy inside zoomed in, parking directly next to me. I’m not saying that this man had ulterior motives, but nonetheless, my gut instinct was to take precautions just in case. I called my mom as I walked closer to the car, telling her I had just finished up near Safety City in Jackson. I figured that as long as I was on the line with someone (particularly someone who knew my exact location) I’d at least have an upper hand in case anything bad did go down.

Thankfully nothing happened that night, but that doesn’t mean that will always be the case. After all, I’ve had several friends and acquaintances tell me stories of their strange encounters and odd “stalkers” as they worked to get their cardio in for the day.

Now, this isn’t to say that I don’t genuinely believe that the vast majority of people have good intentions — good hearts — because I truly think they do. But the sad reality of our world is that not everyone does.

And because of that, I posted my story on Facebook as a reminder to everyone to stay safe…and I got a lot of response and tips in the process! So many tips, in fact, that I wanted to share some of my favorites with you all today. So here they are, the best tips from friends, family, and clients on how to stay safe when working out!

*DISCLAIMER: I truly believe that our little piece of Southeast MO is a safe place, mostly because we have so many men and women who have dedicated their lives and careers to protecting us all. I wrote this as a reminder to just stay vigilant and listen to your gut when you’re out and about on your own. Our folks in Blue can’t be everywhere at once, so we have to use good judgement when we find ourselves in places where they aren’t nearby at the moment!

Tip 1: Stay Alert

In basketball, our coaches would always tell us to “keep our heads on a swivel.” To be alert. Be aware. Know our surroundings at all times. And I think that mentality has followed me into marathon training in a way I never expected.

When I run, I always make sure to notice who is around me. I look for groups of people and stores I can run to in case something goes wrong. I notice the cars that are parked a little too close for comfort and get in through my passenger side when my intuition feels like something is a little off.

Some people might call that paranoid — and maybe I am — but I’d rather be safe than sorry!

Tip 2: Use the Buddy System

There is power in numbers. That’s a phrase that we’ve heard a million times before, but it still rings true!

The likelihood of being attacked decreases as the number in your party increases because any potential attackers see nothing but more obstacles (and witnesses) in their way. So whenever possible, try to find a friend to workout with. Not only will they add a little extra safety, but they’ll give you a boost of accountability and competition that will make your workout even better!

Tip 3: Keep Your Phone Handy

Newfangled watches and gadgets can tempt us to leave our phones in the car during runs (I know I’ve been guilty of doing so more times than I’d like to admit), but that could be setting yourself up for some serious issues.

Not only is your phone crucial in the event of a safety issue, but it’s super necessary in case you start feeling rough and can’t make it back to your house or car. Fun fact: This happened to me the other day when I decided to go for a morning run and didn’t take the heat index into account whatsoever. I left my phone in the car (and also my water, which I realize now was incredibly stupid) in favor of a short 3 mile run without tech. It was all fine and dandy until Mile 2 when my dehydration and body heat mixed into an awful combination that almost made me pass out.

Without a phone, I was left with no choice but to slowly walk my way to my car. And now you can bet there will never be another run in my future where my phone and my water aren’t duct taped to my body at all times!

Tip 4: Carry “The Big Guns”

I’ll be honest, if I was approached I think I’d stand a good chance against an attacker. I’m fairly fit and I’ve taken my fair share of self-defense classes. But who can say that all those moves will automatically come to mind if, God forbid, the situation arises where you need to use them? Just like my CCW certification, this is another method of protection I pray I never have to use. But it’s still going to be with me, just in case.

My chosen version of pepper spray has a reenforced knuckle carrying case. Not too shabby (and only $10!)

Here are a few methods of protection that many of our clients suggested on Facebook:

Pepper Spray: There are several different types of pepper spray…the typical spray, the gel, you name it! Some people swear by the spray because it’s more effective. The only downside is that there’s a good chance you may spray yourself in the process of spraying someone else. The gel is safer on that point, but many debate its potency. The best thing you can do is research, research, research and see what works best for you!

Wasp Spray: For those who want more of a long range shot, then wasp spray is always a good option to carry. Keep in mind that while you don’t have to be as close to your assailant to use it, it’s definitely bulkier than your average can of pepper spray!

Taser: There are a ton of options at local stores for not only pepper spray, but tasers. A quick stop at Academy gave me a ton of options for a reasonable price (ranging from $10-$20 or more depending on size and watts.) Like anything else, researching different brands of tasers and their effectiveness/safety is a must. Just keep in mind that they’re a great up-close option for your safety!

Taser Phone Case: A quick search on Amazon can combine two of our tips together! There are a couple of companies that sell phone cases that have a little extra ‘kick’ to them. While I haven’t tested this one out — and frankly, I’d be afraid to put the thing in my back pocket for fear of an accidental shock — it’s something new on the market to keep in mind!

CCW Workout Pants: Believe it or not, I’ve got a few friends who rarely go anywhere without their gun on their person. They’re highly responsible, educated, and awesome shots (with Concealed Carry certifications that are up to date), and because of that they like to be prepared in the ultimate way. I know this is a form of protection that is often up for debate, so I won’t go into that, but I will say that if you are interested in finding ways to safely carry while working out there are several websites that cater to you. My personal favorite? Concealed Carry yoga pants.

So to all my fellow runners, both male and female, please take this stuff seriously! I know our little area seems quaint and safe, but you never truly know until something happens. A person, an animal…anything can pop up and put you or someone with you in danger.

Keep your head on a swivel and stay prepared y’all!
