Mecklenburg County Begins Enforcing Expanded Smoking Ban

A new tobacco policy goes into effect in Mecklenburg County on Wednesday that makes it illegal to smoke at government owned buildings, greenways, or parks.

Time Warner Cable Arena will be one of the affected buildings.

The arena has never allowed smoking inside, but designated smoking areas currently outside of the building will be eliminated. Patrons will not be allowed to smoke anywhere on the property, including sidewalks.

This is part of the county’s push to cut tobacco usage in half. A goal which could save an estimated 600 lives and $350 million a year. The ban will include electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) and chewing tobacco.

The only exceptions to the ban will be public golf courses and regional parks. However, park leaders are allowed to ban tobacco at public events. County health leaders say the new ordinance will reduce secondhand smoke exposure, help people quit smoking, and keep young people from starting the habit.

Violators of the policy could face a $25 fine. Signs will be posted to remind people of the new policy.
