Medium just moved to my start screen with its new app update. At fucking last — a mobile blogging platform!
I was thinking a lot about this idea back in 2012. Coming to the end of my time at Walmart, I was thinking about what’s next… and seriously considered scratching my itch by building a mobile-first blogging platform.
Especially in emerging economies, where millions of people were getting online for the first time with a phone (skipping the desktop paradigm altogether), it seemed obvious that the world should have a modern blogging platform for folks to create and consume stories via mobile. Meanwhile, the developed world was moving to mobile fast, but existing platforms were struggling to transition. It all seemed like a huge opportunity to me.
In the end, the “Mo’blog” business plan and product sketches ended up in a google drive folder with a bunch of other abandoned ideas, and I joined Aviary (which turned out to be a lot of fun).
Fast forward to today. I’m so excited to see that Medium is now tackling this problem properly! Who else but the folks who brought us Blogger and Twitter — who’ve spent a decade thinking about how to democratize publishing by making it easier and easier to create and consume written content— are going to do a better job of nailing this?!
Thank you @ev at all! Can’t wait to start using it regularly — and I’m fascinated to see how this impacts the wider blogging world.
