Domain Name Basics — An Introduction for Newcomers

It has been my privilege as Chief Information Officer (CIO) of united-domains to help a lot of new hires to have a smooth start and to get familiar with the domain name business. An industry full of acronyms and a complex setting due to ICANN’s multistakeholder model and the variety of policies.
It all started with one course about four years ago on ‘DNS, Domains, and ICANN’, which I presented to all newcomers as well as for my long-standing colleagues as a refresher. Sooner rather than later, I realized that there are too many details and information in my instruction. Therefore, I came to the conclusion that it would be more beneficial to cut them down in multiple presentations targeting one topic at once. Based upon this idea, ‘Domain Name Basics’ was created.
This series, which increased over the years, is meant to provide an overview for newcomers in the domain name industry and is not intended to be exhaustive, but nevertheless, it roughly covers the domain name space. There is no real order to look them through, but I guess it should help to start with the streamlined version of ‘ DNS, Domains and ICANN ‘ and then move forward.
Currently there are as well presentations about ‘ Registries and Registrars’, ‘ Domains’, ‘ WHOIS’, ‘ Universal Acceptance’, ‘ DNS, DNSSEC and DANE’, ‘ Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP)’, ‘ Aftermarket and Premium Domains’, and finally ‘ Security and Privacy ‘. You may find all of those on SlideShare.
Are you working in the domain name industry and have a new hire or do you want to know more about domain names in condensed way? Then I hope I was able to help you a little bit with these training materials.
Please keep in mind that those slide decks are not intended to be exhaustive and please do not hesitate to provide feedback on ‘Domain Name Basics’.
