Tuning In To Find Your Thing

I read a quote the other day and it made me stop and take notice. I wish I could remember where I saw it, because I would give proper attribution AND get the wording exactly right, but here is gist of what I read:

We all know what it takes to lost weight and be in great shape, yet many of us still walks around in something less than the body we desire. It is a good reminder that knowing, is not enough.

The reason those words struck a chord with me that day I read them, is that I have been thinking a lot lately about the gap between what I have “learned” or know as a digital marketer (how I earn my living) and what I am actually doing.

I could give you a list of all things I SHOULD be doing and am not (yet) but I that would tire me out, as much as it would bore you. So I am going to focus in on just one thing that I know, and I have not (yet) made peace with in my entrepreneurial life.

The Riches Are In The Niches

Have you heard that saying before? In the world of online marketing, it basically means that if you try to be all things to all people, you will appeal to no one and it feels like you are along in a desert where no one cares about the stuff you create (like writing this blog post).

The antidote to this problem is to get really specific about WHO you are serving, WHAT problem they have, and HOW you plan to solve it for them.

I know this stuff. I have read books on it. I have consulted with clients to hone their messaging to tap into the power of a precise message that feels like someone is talking to you directly.


But I am having the hardest time doing that with my own personal brand and newsletter. And because I am reluctant to be ONE thing, I am not growing. My goal is 10,000 subscribers and I am sitting at 106 right now.

The 106 people who hear from me on a weekly basis — many of them family or friends, co-workers or people I have built the know, like and trust with. They know I am more than one thing. I love finding cool stuff on the interwebs.

I love Star Wars and I love finding examples of future technology in the world we live in today. I love marketing and I love entrepreneurs because at 45 years of age, I am still trying to teach myself to be one (a good one).

So you could say, I am finding my voice and my ONE thing. I honestly don’t know what it is yet, but I do know that it (the focused voice and message) is the key to setting a light to the fire.

Even this blog post feels like self-introspective crap. But I made an agreement with myself to start this journey and blogging here in this space in Medium. So it is authentic, even if it is a bit ugly and not-worthy of reading. Maybe I should include that warning, right up front.
