Let’s be clear. AI doesn’t have feelings. It doesn’t have an agenda. It is simply trying to carry out a request for which it was tasked. So, my labeling of an article with a clickbaity title about what AI “likes” is admittedly misleading. BUT, I’d strongly argue that the concept is still important. While AI may not have human feelings, how it “thinks” about a country could bias outcomes as ethnic and geopolitical decisions are being made from these models.

Given that Facebook was recently in the headlines about their CICERO model for multi-lateral diplomacy, I thought it was a perfect time to see what another AI model, GPT-3, “thought” about other countries.

For the 195 countries recognized by the UN (193 member states plus Holy See/Vatican City and the State of Palestine), I asked OpenAI’s GPT-3 to return one thing it liked and disliked about every country. The TLDR of all of this is:

GPT-3 likes countries with beautiful landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and a vibrant music or nightlife scene. It also appreciates countries with a high standard of living and well-developed infrastructure. GPT-3 dislikes countries with ongoing conflict or violence, poor infrastructure, crime, inequality, and limited freedom of expression.

Created on Midjourney by Michael Todasco on December 12, 2022 from the prompt “a north korean monument to artificial intelligence — v 4 — q 2”

Some descriptions read like a travel brochure, and others like a UN humanitarian report. Keep in mind the wealth of data on the internet about these countries is what GPT-3 was trained on. It is a lot of the English language on the internet, and clearly, it read every TripAdvisor review about Switzerland.

What does GPT-3 think about where you’re from? Here are all the details in alphabetical order. No text has been changed, the inconsistent format was cleaned up a little.
