People feel pain for those more like themselves than they do for those different from them — The Brain

There is so much good knowledge in David Eagleman’s The Brain TV series on PBS. Perhaps the most fascinating fact— or simply the most disturbing — is how the human mind can be so cruel to a group of people. When we stop seeing humans as people — it changes our brain’s sense of empathy. It turns down the amount of pain we feel when they are in pain. This isn’t just happening among Nazis, it happens everywhere towards people of different religious groups or poorer social economic classes.
