“For blacks death is not really a future reality; it is a part of their everyday existence. They see death every time they see whites.”
This is a very strong statement that breaks my heart. I am looking forward to Multicultural this summer to gain a deeper understanding of this topic.
White rulers in society seek to evade the reality of their end by devising recreational hobbies. They play golf, vacation in distant lands, live in all manner of luxury.
While I certainly have never considered myself a ruler, I have no doubt benefited greatly from privilege. Devising recreational hobbies is an interesting statement. I love rock climbing but it is essentially a pointless endeavor that often seeks the most beautiful line up a route versus a simple alternative. The field is also dominated by white athletes with only a handful of minorities at an elite level. I have always sought mountains to renew my spirit and ground myself. While this does not have to be expensive, my privilege contributes to the economic freedom to escape for a while and it has not been unnoticed that it is predominately other white people that I will encounter along the way.
