I admittedly only saw a condensed 5 minute version, but I thought it was spot on. Perhaps if I’d seen the rest I would agree that it was too focussed on race or that there were some jokes that were too mean and not funny enough, but I believe your mistake is in believing that his comedic audience was in that room. It was not. Wilmore knew well enough that most of the country would see the performance and that most of the country is sick of the BS in the media and on Capitol Hill, so he called them out on it. In that context the jokes I heard were hilarious and appropriate, especially the MSNBC and CNN jokes (“speaking of drones…”, I mean come on that was perfect). I also thought the President’s hair jokes were pretty clever.
