Comedians Share Running Commentary on Adult Entertainment

Let’s face it, porn is a massive industry. In any given moment, a total of 28,258 users are watching internet adult videos and spending a combined $3,075 per second. The estimated value of all pornography is somewhere around 4 billion dollars per year.

Every 39 seconds a new pornographic movie is made in the United States, but, with the rise of the internet, pornographic films have become largely mass produced and very low-budget. In past decades most film companies used to strive for a higher level of quality and storyline, whereas now many companies just try to churn out as many films as they can. Over the years the rise in demand has followed a decline in the quality and creativity of the films. While adult entertainment has seldom aspired to be “high art,” most films these days have now become low budget and outright silly.

Enter OUTtv’s new show: Pop Porn, a hilarious and entertaining look at contemporary gay porn films complete with running commentary in real time.

Huffington Post recently had a chance to chat with the director of the show, Charlie David. David is a Canadian actor, producer, and director who is best known for his work as the lead role in the LGBT horror series Dante’s Cove. He has also hosted F.Y.E!, SpyTV, BUMP! and Crash Test Mommy.

Following his 2013 documentary I am A Pornstar, David was surprised and intrigued by the things he saw on the sets of porn films. This is when the idea for Pop Porn came to him. “My previous documentary sparked a curiosity about the porn business,” says the director, “including how the actors got into the industry.” For instance, the number of straight actors working in gay porn astonished him.

Pop Porn takes your average porn genre film (whether it be fantasy, family drama, first time experience) and overlays it with commentaries by comedians and drag queens: think Howard Stern meets gay adult entertainment.

The show deconstructs each theme point by point, adding a fresh and hilarious perspective that will have you in stitches.

All of the naughty parts are blocked out on the screen (usually with an appropriately chosen eggplant or peach cartoon), so there is no 100% nudity, though the show is certainly recommended for 18 years of age or older. “People should gather their friends together to enjoy PopPorn with some popcorn and wine,” says David.

Sometimes the comedians are biting and/or merciless in their reactions to the scenes. For instance, in one such segment an older gay gentlemen offers a younger blond twink a hard hat on a construction site. The voice over: “Wow, do you think I have what it takes to be a village person?” In other scenes they are more playful, like when an unexpected female guest appears in the scene: “Wow, a girl in gay porn — that’s like a unicorn!” They comment on the decor of the films, the budget, the horrible dialog or the lack of plot. Anything to point out just how ridiculous these films can be.

Charlie David encourages readers to give the show a try via OUTtvGo or Amazon Prime. Share your thoughts and reviews via their social media channels.
