stones seem foreign to the soil
Stones seem foreign to the soil. Yet see
How the clods cling to each crevice. They say
Earth has its origins in stones. That the
Rains, rivers and glaciers made mountains flee
Into lakes where they settled into clay.
Soap and warm faucet water wash away
Cool crumbs from farm calloused hands. We have been
Out clearing stones from the pasture all day.
The mud sticks under the nails and might stay
There until the fall harvest is hauled in.
An acrostic written for a friend. That earth is still under my nails.
