On other days, the Largo can absolutely fucking gut me.
Antonín Dvořák’s ‘Symphony From The New World’ Is The Best, Bar None

Yes — absolutely. I certainly have no argument about this symphony being better than any other. The only other symphony I could even offer that compares is Mahler’s symphony/non-symphony Das Lied von der Erde, whose opening movement/song “Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde” seems to cover every exalted and every wretched feeling in our experience. I mean, the way he sets these words…damn, it is like the face of death itself, & then the reproach of that horror by the survivors (the song towers even over every Verdi brindisi):

…Im Mondschein auf den Gräbern

hockt eine wildgespenstische Gestalt —

Ein Aff ist’s! Hört ihr, wie sein Heulen hinausgellt

in den süßen Duft des Lebens!

Jetzt nehm den Wein! Jetzt ist es Zeit, Genossen!

Leert eure goldnen Becher zu Grund!

Dunkel ist das Leben, ist der Tod!
