Hey marjorie steele, nice article.
I think part of the beauty of life is learning about the history, habits, customs and values of not only our own ancestral heritage and culture but that of others as well. Demanding that people “stay in their lane” and categorically avoid adopting some of the laudable characteristics of other cultures that they admire is kind of oppressive. As you said, “well who am I supposed to be?” Should others be allowed to define that?
I do believe there is an argument to be made against thoughtlessly adopting the characteristics of other cultures, but those instances can be viewed as teachable moments rather than opportunities to heap derision and scorn on people.
