I remember when I fell out of love with the Oscars. A little googling tells me it was 2004. A few months prior to the show, I had watched Johnny Depp become the pirate everybody wanted to mimic in Pirates of the Caribbean – the Curse of the Black Pearl. He got nominated for an Oscar and didn’t win. I was burnt.
It was then I realised the Oscars isn’t for movie lovers – it’s for movie makers. And that’s an entirely different spectrum. For movie fans, there’s the people’s choice award, which Johnny Depp won, of course.
The thing is, while within the industry the Oscars may be one of the highest achievements a movie maker can accomplish, and may open certain doors for an actor, it’s of little relevance to the movie watcher who simply wants to be entertained. You might get a little trill of joy when a movie you enjoy scores an Oscar win, but that’s about it. You might even go on to become a right movie snob.
For the science fiction/fantasy fan, the Oscars are generally a poor hunting ground. Ditto the action fan. And the romcom fan. Definitely the romcom fan. The best actor gongs are usually in the custody of stars of a certain kind of drama. In my opinion, the Oscars are a celebration of boring films. And that’s perfectly okay, because the Academy only informs me about films that are acclaimed by the Academy – it doesn’t make a difference to my movie watching habits.
I already know the movies I’m looking forward to this year will not be in contention for awards come next January, and I really don’t care.
I also don’t really care that actors of colour don’t win a lot of Oscars. The most high profile black Oscars have been for performances that I wouldn’t give a second watch. There’s also the little fact that a lot of actors of colour are pigeonholed into roles that are, quite frankly, utter tripe. (I’m looking at you and your perennially terrible films, Tyler Perry.)
I think Ice Cube had the best reaction of any actor to the current furore over the omission of actors of colour from all the acting categories this year
