As we approach the grand finale of awards season tonight, I decided it was time to clear up (in late February) one of the most controversial topics of 2016. What was the best movie trailer of the year? And as a self-appointed movie trailer expert (just ask my gchat friends), I felt this was the perfect opportunity to resolve this much debated topic. Here are my Top 10 Movie Trailers of 2016:

#10) Jungle Book: Official Trailer #2

You know what I love in a trailer… when the trailer flexes its muscle and shows a heroic list of all the heavyweights they signed for the movie. This includes Bill Murray, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johannsson, Ben Kingsley, and Christopher Walken!! You had me at Bill. Then you throw in the new rendition of “Bare Necessities” sung by Bill… yeah, that will be stuck in your head for days. In a good way though.

#9) Fences: Official Trailer #1

You get an Oscar! You get an Oscar! Everyone gets an Oscar! I don’t even have to watch this movie and I know everyone involved earned and deserves an Oscar.

#8) Captain America: Civil War: Official Trailer #2

The best movie trailers give you a hint of the movie, but also share nothing at the same time. So let’s go through the trailer… Massive motion picture; check. Setting up the problem; check. Teasing an epic battle between superheroes; check. The introduction of Black Panther; check. The introduction of Spider-man; check. You guys, Marvel knows what they are doing.

#7) Finding Dory: Official Trailer #1

If you include a Peter Gabriel song in the trailer, it’s going to make this list. Also, is he touring? Would love to see him in concert.

#6) Jackie: Official Trailer

Woah, that was powerful. Natalie Portman looks primed for another Oscar. The fact that Portman played Queen Amidala in Star Wars and is now crushing her role as Jackie Kennedy blows my mind. We’ve all grown.

#5) Rogue One: Teaser Trailer #1

Speaking of Star Wars… I don’t care what people say about the “Death Star sirens,” it gave everyone chills. Yes, everyone. Don’t lie. Also, let’s just ignore that a few segments of this trailer never ended up in the final cut of the movie.

#4) The Magnificent Seven: Teaser Trailer

This trailer was flawlessly edited. Also, Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt in a western?! Together?! Fighting an army?! Directed by the guy who did Training Day?! Yes, please.

#3) Logan: Official Trailer

This is a statement trailer. The use of Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” is bold and wonderfully done. This is also something we have never seen before with this franchise, and I love it. Regardless of how this movie turns out, this trailer was so well done and unique it started Oscar buzz for a superhero movie, a campaign to get Deadpool and Wolverine in the same movie, and a spin-off of movie trailers being remade with Cash’s song. My favorite is “Vader.”

#2) The Nice Guys: Official Final Trailer

I’m going to say it… someone has to… this is the most underrated movie of the year and the best action comedy since Rush Hour (1998). This trailer perfectly captures the amount of fun we see in the movie and gives us a glimpse of the great comedic chemistry between Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Also, this is Ryan Gosling’s best performance of the year. Hands down.

#1) Suicide Squad: Official Trailer #1

The timing with Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is some of the best you will ever see in a trailer. Will Smith and Margot Robbie look fantastic in their roles, Jared Leto seems like a worthwhile addition to the great actors who have played the Joker, and this feels like it could be the franchise that saves DC Comics! Ultimately, the trailer was so good the movie could never live up to the hype. Actually, it wasn’t even close. Seriously, it was very bad. But hey, one hell of a trailer though!

Bonus: Planet Earth II: Official Extended Trailer

10 years in the making! Mind. Blown.

I hope this post offended at least 4 people…
