Huh. From the title, I thought maybe Intel’s research would be about ‘level 2’ and ‘level 3’ self-driving vehicles —how, or whether, you can safely put a ‘mostly self-driving but sometimes a human driver has to quickly take control’ car on the road and not have that lead to accidents where the car is judged to have been unsafe to operate.

Even level 4 needs some human-factors investigation. If an L4 SD car is stopping due to a situation it cannot handle, but the driver can take back control — will the driver evaluate the situation well enough before grabbing back control, or might they panic and cause an accident?
