I read that section as saying that it made sense to make the 1960s Oceans 11. The movie was 40 years old, relied on the Rat Pack, it was black and white, dated in many ways, etc.

That all meant that redoing it with Clooney/Pitt/Damon made sense in theory (then made sense at the box office).
