Surely it’s frivolous to pretend that the EU Parliament, a body with no executive arm, e.g. a responsible ministry, has any real control over the EU bureaucracy. Moreover, the EU Parliament has no real legislative power. Bills are drafted by the European Commission and presented to the EU Parliament for approval: an arrangement more authoritarian than democratic.

Equally frivolous is the notion that the EU Parliament effectively represents the interests of the people. Would the people of Greece, for example, agree that it does?

The fact of the matter is that the EU Parliament is a largely powerless talking shop and that all effective power lies in the hands of a bureaucracy that operates without regard for democratic accountability.
