Yes, I believe it was Stalin who described writers as “engineers of the human soul.”

Personally I don’t believe that writers have a responsibility to anybody or anything beyond their conscience and the truth, insofar as they can discern the truth. Writers have no business trying to change the world. Writers accepting that mission soon find themselves falsifying their beliefs and feelings in the name of some higher purpose. That is to say, they devolve into propagandists.
