Is Now a Good Time to Tackle Digital Transformation?

Now is an excellent time to be more digital, but being more digital is not digital transformation.

Ask yourself, is this going to significantly affect the way everyone works? If yes, then it’s a transformation. If no, then it’s not.

Being more digital makes it easier to do a digital transformation.

Crucially, transformation is more about people than technology.

  1. Purpose — be very clear on what you are trying to achieve and why you want to change. This purpose should dovetail with your organisation’s overall strategy and mission.
  2. People — make sure you have the right leadership, capability, culture and capacity to undertake the work. To pull it off, you’ll need experience, along with a nice balance of consultants, creatives and pedants, and you’ll need to work hard to keep them all focussed and on the journey.
  3. Process — put the right structures and resources in place to manage, govern and support the work. Transformations take time and money and are often upsetting. There will be casualties along the way so make sure your steering group is in place early and aligned behind the purpose.
  4. Technology — lastly, choose technologies that support your strategy, people and processes. There are many different and equally good technology options, the best vendor and platform is the one that fits with your culture and goals.

To succeed, start your transformation at the top by deeply understanding what your customers want.
