Two points on the Heinz story:

In the free market, companies compete on quality. You pay a little more for a branded product because you know the company is concerned about its reputation. The free market works.

Companies love to be regulated — it reduces competition and increases profits. Big companies find it easier to comply with regulation than small companies, and encourage regulation to drive out smaller, low cost competitors. Heinz did that and now has a 60% market share.
