Design : Society = Present : Future
What’s Design today ?
Mauro Porcini said :
“Design is deeply understanding people, real people with problems and needs. Therefore Innovation means anticipating their needs”
Where are the real people ?
Humans are on the streets, in the hospitals, people are the poor under bridges asking for money, are the oppressed, the powerless and the invisible.
Design Innovation is going to have an impact on the population through new positioning on the market that is happening mainly in two directions : Healthcare and Politics.
The first one meant as hospitals, healthcare products, support to rural villages in the third world, etc..
The second one meant as taxation, voting process, law system, education, banks, etc..
What’s the future of Design ?
Well, when it’s about future, let’s always talk about assumptions and forecast, because nowadays living in the present is like to have the opportunity to go back in the past and decide to don’t change anything.
Tony Hawk once said that the engineers who developed the first skateboard couldn’t imagine a that time all the tricks that he was going to do with a skate, they just designed it to go straight on a plane asphalt.
As well, who could have imagined that designers were going to make revolution and innovation with post-it ?
We all saw the evolution of roles, the representatives of the design industry : industrial designers, graphic designers.. then product designers, user experience designers and user interface designers..
Design roles will adapt to the market, we’ll see Human Organ Designers, Intelligent System Designers, Real Time 3D Designers..
Design Thinkers will have a seat at the government’s table, because is needed to re-think the entire system.
But overthinking clogs up the pipes. As under thinking makes them not working at all.
Marcus Tullius Cicero coined the term “Republic”, from latin “Res Publica” which means “the thing of the people”.
The politic was made by philosophers and thinkers, nowadays is made by entrepreneurs and show-men who have not that much in common with the real politic.
We hope that Design will help our civilised society to bring back the real thinkers to the “Agorà”.
Here we can list few names of entities that have a design department focus on Service and Strategy.
For Healthcare : Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, Collective Health Inc. in San Matteo..
For humanitarian aid : Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy Human Rights, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, United Nations, Unicef, Emergency..
For financial services : Credit Suisse, Allianz, Visa..
For airlines services : British Airways, Emirates Airline..
For governative organisations : New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment of NZ, the Government of UK..
Design Thinking to re-design the world, or better, to fix the bugs.
Well, that’s a sexy idea.
So, what a better moment to quote Sasha Grey :
“My goal is to be myself, and to challenge stereotypes, and to follow the rules, and break them, and make new rules. It’s not about doing something that’s already been done. That would be silly.”
One keyword : evolution.
Which means improvement, growth, development, progress.
That’s the reason of this equation :
Design : Society = Present : Future
Michelangelo knew it when he painted The Creation Of Adam in the Sistine Chapel.
Something happened between the flourish and glorious past of our greek and latin ancient, and the present world, the parabola of civilisation had a break, it didn’t grow up anymore.
People have stopped evolving because they stopped learning.
Nas wrote these lyrics :
“Egypt was the place that Alexander the Great went
He was so shocked at the mountains with black faces
Shot up they nose to impose what basically
Still goes on today, you see?
If the truth is told, the youth can grow
Then learn to survive until they gain control
Nobody says you have to be gangstas, hoes
Read more, learn more, change the globe”
Design for good, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
But before a drop will fall from the top into the ocean, it’s time to wake up.
