The gist of my too brief exposition was NOT that “knowing a lot means knowing everything.”

After I published the post above beginning “The gist of my too brief exposition”, the reality of the gigantic number employed by the mathematician on the beach on the SCI channel came to my 56 year old brain: He was saying the Universe contains: 1times 10 to the 10th to the 123 rd power of bits of information. He said with even ‘advanced technology’ the most that some indeterminate mass of advanced men and women could collect store and analyze would amount to a mere thimbleful of this, to wit: 1 times 10 to the 10th to the 100th power of bits of information. So the gap, to him, between the Information in the Universe and what we can Ultimately wrassle to the ground is a vast, vast , VAST number. He believes no matter the technology and time available to men and women the task is beyond us, Fundamentally, Forever, Forever Fundamentally Beyond. I might add his grandfather was on the sales force pitching the powerful virtues of “the UNIVAC” to corporations in the Spring,1951.

A single golf clap? Or a long standing ovation?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
