Great point, Kev. I think it’s less of a matter of reporting structure — whether these front-end folks report to Design or Engineering is irrelevant in my opinion. It’s more about carving out a role for this craft.
In our organization (largely due to the technical complexity of our front-end, the client-side nature of our product, and the rate at which our product usage has increased over time) Engineering has historically had other priorities. It’s not that they don’t care about the customer experience, they do, actually. Very much so. It’s more that user experience minutia is lower priority for them. We didn’t want to let the implementation side of design fall by the wayside, so we found a home for it within the design org. :)
