When I went to see Bruce Tognazzini speak on interaction design, he mentioned that the use of red buttons to signal “danger” (eg “delete”) in system dialogues turned out to have the reverse effect of what the designers wanted. Many users were in fact drawn to the red button and clicked on it by accident. That’s one indication that means you might be able to generalise this effect.
