People have surprised me

Moving away from my hometown has given me much greater perspective of my life so far.

People that I truly connected with, I still talk to regularly. We’ve got trains and planes and cars and not even 2,000 miles will break our friendships. I guess I can thank the connectivity of the modern world for that one.

There are some people I considered mentors who haven’t even asked me how it’s going, or how I’m doing mentally or what I need help with, or even seeing if I’m staying on track. Sometimes I wonder if their “mentorship” was just their way of building a following.

What’s been truly surprising, is the few people that I’ve minorly stayed in touch with through the years deciding to reach out. Some of these people I met at church, or at school, or when I was a +1 to a party. These people are more interested in my life than even my so-called mentors.

Don’t read this wrong. I have mentors who have Facetimed, and people I barely talk to who didn’t reach out. I guess I’m just seeing the fakes forget me, and genuine people are the ones reaching out. I’m just surprised at some of the people who have shown themselves.

At this point I’m just being careful, some people will disappoint but that’s how life works. Ultimately I win, because far more people have surprised me.

I know this is a disjointed, unfinished thought. But thanks for reading,

Mason
