Joylent — Day 1
Weight: 113.65kg
I’m bad at eating. I make my schedule so full, I hardly have any time to eat properly, and don’t have the motivation to prepare food in advance, e.g. during the weekend. Because of these reasons, I tend to eat unhealthy snacks and go out to eat a lot. But this has made me become overweight quite a bit.
So I decided to do an experiment. I ordered 31 bags of Joylent, with various tastes. I plan on going almost exclusively to Joylent for the coming period as an experiment. After that, I’ll decide how I will continue.
My starting weight is 113.65kg. This puts me at a BMI of 36.7, clearly in the obese classification. I tend to go up and down quite a bit, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been under 95kg, which still is on the border between overweight and obese. I should end up somewhere just under 80kg in the long run, at which point I should start defining goals in terms of body fat percentage instead of kg. But that won’t be happening this year, so let’s first see that I could go back to weighing less than 100kg.
Before
The last few months I’ve been watching my food a little bit more then I was before. This means I have lost some weight in the last two months. I was not religiously following any diet though, and did allow exceptions to myself. I had the impression I started to allow myself more exceptions, and thus eating more unhealthy. Yesterday, I ate French Fries with a Bicky Burger, as I was expecting my shipment of Joylent this morning, and wanted to “feast” on that before starting this experiment.
Today
Breakfast — 9h
My box of Joylent did arrive this morning, just as I was expecting. I promptly unboxed it, and found my bags of Joylent, together with three shakers, a scoop and a small paper with explanations.
I carried on by putting 500ml water in a shaker, opened the bag of chocolate-flavored Joylent, and tried to use the scoop to add 3.5 scoops to the shaker. The powder goes everywhere, and it’s difficult to scoop out of the bags, because the opening is slightly too small for it. After two scoops, there’s a mountain of powder on the shaker, and adding the third spills a bit of the Joylent over. I decide to shake it already, before adding the last half scoop.
It tasted ok, although a bit gritty. I though I hadn’t shaken it enough, so I do so for some more time, but this taste remains. I decide to Google this, and indeed other people have the same issue. They recommend putting it in the fridge, maybe even the night before. I continue to drink mine as is, since it isn’t too bad.
As I had spent a little time Googling this, I almost had to leave for work, and noticed there was one issue with my original plan of having a bag at work: I only had one scoop. I didn’t think about it earlier, and I could probably have asked for an additional one, but for now I have to find another solution. For today, that meant preparing another shaker with Joylent, to be filled with water at work. To have some variation, I opened a bag of banana-flavor.
Lunch — 12h30
I was hungrier than I would normally be by lunchtime. It was not yet getting a full feeling of eating Joylent, so I was happy to have lunch.
I filled my shaker with cold water, and shook. I like the banana-flavor less then I did the chocolate. And again this was gritty, but as I did not have the possibility to cool it down at work today, I could not test it out of the fridge.
During the afternoon, I started noticing I needed to fart. Something my body already does quite a bit, but this was clearly a bit different, also smell-wise.
Dinner — 19h30
I had prepared chocolate-flavor Joylent and put it in the fridge this afternoon. It’s not that much different from uncooled Joylent in my opinion.
After my first day, I must say, I was hungry today. It didn’t provide me with a full feeling for the whole day. But it wasn’t a big problem either. I guess I’ll need a couple of days to adjust.
