Barefoot Pinot Grigio from California

Pinot Grigio / aka Pinot Gris is a chameleon of a grape; a mutation of Burgundy’s great Pinot Noir, it produces everything from simple refreshing quaffers in Italy’s north east to rich, ripe-yet-dry, food-friendly wines in Alsace.

Once the “pub white” of choice, this Californian Pinot Grigio from Barefoot is something different again. And it owes its character much more to winemaking than to viticulture.

Barefoot Wine started up in California in the 1960s. Its founders believed that wine should be more fun and less serious; and created a wine that could be enjoyed by everyone from first-time wine drinkers to hard-core aficionados.

Barefoot is the most awarded and №1 wine brand in the US and was introduced to the UK in 2009.

The one thing the brand is serious about is making good wine and it has won over 2,000 awards for its range of wines worldwide.

Staying true to its grassroots beginnings, Barefoot Wine gives back to local non-profit groups through charitable wine donations. Barefoot has also been an ally to the LGBT community for over 30 years

Barefoot Pinot Grigio (£8, nationwide)

They say:

Light-bodied and floral, Barefoot Pinot Grigio is a refreshing white wine with tart green apple, fruity citrus and peachy undertones that compliment grilled fish and white meats perfectly. This time of the year, pair with a vegetable risotto, roasted squash, or creamy pasta dish.

I say:

12%

pale yellow; dried pineapple pieces, pear drops, yellow flowers and sherbet; sherbetty with sweet dried pineapple, dried apricots and peach slices with prominent, persistent leesiness. Expressive and fault-free, if somewhat overworked and simplistic.

Drinks well on first opening — needs no aeration and will not repay any cellaring.

Match with strongly flavoured, all-American foods such as burgers with relish or hot dogs with ketchup and mustard.
