TomTom Celebrates 28 Years.
Wow! What a journey! That’s it, we can finally blow out the 28 candles on our birthday cake!
So many steps have been taken, so many projects have been led, so many products have been launched.
Over the next 12 months we’ll be giving you more and better ways to lighten the burdens you’re faced with on the go. Whether it’s the necessary evil of your morning commute or the thrilling weekend rides you’re planning with friends, we’ll be there to help.
Not going to lie, over the past few years, we’ve been doing a lot of existential thinking — thinking about you and how you use our technologies. The truth, of course, is that if you’re taking a vehicle from one place to another, it is highly likely that TomTom location technology is guiding your journey. Your Uber to the airport, directions via Apple Maps to the new restaurant you’ve been wanting to try, your car’s in-dash navigation system — each one runs on TomTom.
TomTom remains a household name. Having our satellite navigation devices on your dashboard and the dashboard of your parents’ car instantly made car trips quicker, safer, and easier. While this has brought TomTom a lot of brand equity and goodwill, it has also covered us and what we do in the patina of nostalgia. So then, we’ve been asking ourselves, how do we continue being one of the world’s most-loved brands? We think it’s by investing in our newest products, applications, and platforms with features that’ll make journeys even quicker, even safer, and even easier. In two words: even better.
> We’ve got a loyal customer base that still swears by our SatNavs. We’re quick to remind naysayers that we still sell 5,000 devices every day. For these loyalists who enjoy the convenience of a dedicated device for driving, we launched GO Premium, our first smart connected device with IFTTT integration. GO Premium puts every driver in the enviable position of being able to access and adjust their home’s heating, lighting, and electronics from the road.
> For those who dropped off because they felt our product lineup didn’t have much to offer them anymore, or switched from using a SatNav to an app-based navigation platform, we’ve brought our best technologies and services — maps, traffic, speed cams — into GO Navigation, our superior driving app available on iOS and, I’m pleased to announce, now on Android.
> We’ve spent nearly 30 years focused solely on making sure that your A to B happened ASAP. Everyone has those moments though when they’re up for exploration and a scenic detour. For them, we’ve developed the RoadTrips platform, available for free download as a mobile and desktop app, to inspire and to make journey planning, activity scheduling, driving and riding guidance (whether in the app or synced with your SatNav) effortless. Through RoadTrips you can also share your journey’s itinerary, and the photos you took, with the RoadTrips Community. RoadTrips launches in Australia and New Zealand this winter and to the rest of the world in spring 2020.
Community-based platforms, such as RoadTrips, have become priorities for us. These platforms make the consumer even more secure and comfortable in the driver seat (no, we’re not above puns) and increase the precision of TomTom’s maps, guidance, and traffic alerts.
Keep an eye out, then, for another massive product launch in 2020: community input, verified by TomTom, and the best of TomTom location technology, free in one mobile app.
We’re thrilled to be there with you — on your commutes, your holiday drives, and your weekend ride outs, really wherever your journeys take you — and to welcome you into the apps and onto the platforms we’ll be launching in 2020!
Looking forward,
Carole.
