Re the question, it is a tricky one; outside trying to truly understand their viewpoint and frame of reference, which will help in devising how to explain your take, it is always challenging. Even if you actually have a new and better way than what is standard, it takes time to prove the benefits through the data, and then you might be able to convince outsiders but only one at a time until this becomes the new standard (or hot thing). Until that time, I think you need to compare to existing standards and just collect some “bonus points” for the new and better.
