How To Let Go

I’m reminded of Laurie Anderson’s ‘Walking and Falling’:
You’re walking. And you don’t always realize it,
but you’re always falling.
With each step you fall forward slightly.
And then catch yourself from falling.
Over and over, you’re falling.
And then catching yourself from falling.
And this is how you can be walking and falling
at the same time.
I skate inlines in the park and the skates add an additional sense of always being on the verge of falling. The forward motion on wheels on your feet, and having to catch yourself with each step can almost feel like a trance. Sometimes I fall too, but that’s what the protective gear is for!
