Perhaps some additional context would have been useful in my article! Teach Starter creates downloadable teaching resources for primary school teachers. Our business operates on an annual recurring subscription model with a price point of US$80/year for an individual teacher.
Because of such a low price point, we have never done direct sales or had to have a sales team. Essentially, we rely on providing valuable free content via social media, combined with word of mouth, as the main mechanisms for generating leads. We firmly believe that help builds trust.
I agree that sales is far from dead and can understand that for other businesses, sales is a must. However, I would definitely say that the value first approach can be applied to any business and can complement a sales team.
