Why I’ve Decided to Start Writing in My Thirties
For years I’ve had this fundamental necessity to write. It’s like an annoying obsession; you have your work, your friends and family, your hobbies… but you’re unfulfilled. Your head is full of ideas, but you never let them out, so the ball keeps getting bigger and bigger. And at last you make the decision, I need to write like crazy or this is going to get much worse. I’m thirty-one, thirty-two next week, and I want to become a writer.
So Why now? Since I was a kid I’ve been obsessed with books, but it wasn’t until High School that I decided to write a short novel. Then, during my College years I began writing again, non-fiction this time. But work gets into your life and you keep having less and less time to sit, think, research and finally compose a good piece of writing.
Luckily after some years focusing on building a career I have a more normal schedule where I can plan and dedicate some hours a day to my real passion. Plus although my young age, I genuinely think I’ve reached a state of fullfilness in my workplace that allows me to reflect on which will be the next significant chapter of my life. Although I have a nice and well-paid job, I will like at certain point in my life to live of my writing.
Why Medium? Honestly, I didn’t even knew the existence of Medium a few days ago, I owe it to a friend that recommended it to me. For years I’ve tried desperately using several platforms for my writing, mainly blogs and social networks but at the end, they’ve never worked for me. Twitter, Facebook. etc. are plagued with trolls and random users who can trash your work in seconds.
Medium offers a nice, user friendly, mind opened world where for sure I can express myself better. And certainly, the possibility of earning some money from my writing, although not a priority at the moment, makes it still more interesting in the long run.
What I’m going to write about? Throughout my life I’ve wanted to write about several topics. I’m a very easily inspired and creative person. My travels, the hundreds of books I’ve read and news I’ve followed, the TV shows and films I’ve watched, my own experiences living in several places, my work… all this baggage has given me plenty of curiosity about certain areas of interest. So, If I have the time it will be a pleasure to write about:
International Politics: I mean, is what I’ve studied in College and read about throughout the day for many years now. I’m passionate about whats happening in the world and how history unfolds just before our eyes.
Cultural Reviews: I love sharing with my readers the books, shows and films I’ve enjoyed and get to know other opinions about them.
Travels: I don’t travel as I used, work, again, but I nevertheless try to discover new places when I’m in my holidays. History, culture, food, all those precious things we encounter in our journeys that enrich our lives forever.
Climate Change: Just the thing that keeps me working from nine to five for the last years. We can only imagine the scope of Climate Change in our lives, the planet, politics, culture for the next decades… And I would like to share some of my thoughts about it.
A Novel: I also want to try to write fiction. By the way, I’ve forgotten to share with you that its the first time in years that I’ve written in English. My mother tongue and day to day language is Spanish. Why I’m telling you this? I find it easier to write about facts, opinions, etc. in English, I think I have the skills and plenty of time to get better at it. At this moment, and time will tell, I’m still a long journey away from writing fiction in English.
In my opinion it takes more skill and language knowledge to do it. But thats for the time being. Therefore, I will keep this first piece of fiction in Spanish humbly hoping that someday I can properly translate it to English by myself.
Finally, I will reserve some time to write pieces like this one, thoughts and confessions about my life, writing or whatever inspires me.
I know this piece is way too personal and probably not very interesting for all those readers searching for insightful and/or informative writing, but I needed it for myself, to properly organize my thoughts (jumbling around in my head for years), and to prove me that I can write properly in English (it’s not a joke! It’s been ages since I’ve written in English, although, to be clear, about 90% of all I watch and read is in English).
So that’s all for now, I will keep you informed.
