Keep in mind that this applies to any Customs and Border Patrol points regardless of destination. I recently went to Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines through LAX. This required being routed through the international terminal, and through U.S. Customs, on the return flight. I suspect it’s the same when traveling to any U.S. State or territory outside of the continental U.S.
