What are CryptoPunks?
Cryptopunks are 24x24 pixel digital art images that are algorithmically generated. These are mostly images of punky-looking males and females each having a unique set of features like wearing a cap, beard, sunglasses, smoke pipe, etc. There are a total of 10,000 CryptoPunks and each one is unique. Every punk has its own profile page that shows its features as well as its ownership status. All these CryptoPunks are in the form of NFTs. The project was started by LarvaLabs in 2017 to experiment with the concept of NFTs. They were initially given away for free!!
Why are they selling for Millions of Dollars?
The CryptoPunks kickstarted the revolution of NFTs. They are one of the early NFT projects minted on the ethereum blockchain. They made the concept of NFT popularized that digital assets could be owned. Although the images can be copied, due to intrinsic properties of NFT, at any single point of time it can have only one owner and that too can be verified on the blockchain. People started using them as their profile pictures on Social media which created a huge buzz about them. They have created a cult following across all social media.
As they are one of the early NFT projects popularizing the concept of digital asset ownership, they are being sold for millions of dollars. Few of them have a unique combination of features and traits making them very rare further increasing their value.

1. CryptoPunk 3100: It is the most expensive one. It is one of the 9 rare alien CryptoPunk. It was sold for $7.58 million dollars.
2. CryptoPunk 7804: It is the second most expensive punk that was sold for $7.5 million dollars. It is also one of the 9 rare aliens punk.
3. CryptoPunk 5217: It is the third most expensive punk sold for $5.45 million dollars. It is one of the rare 24 rare apes CryptoPunks.
