First popularised in the 1950s by philosopher Karl Popper, “Conspiracy theories” have constantly captivated human imagination. Providing alternative narratives which challenge mainstream beliefs. Although they are viewed as false and arguably lack credible evidence, these theories have a certain ability to fuel public interest and spark heated debates. Even if you don’t engage, it is hard to ignore them completely.

Regardless of the implausibility they serve as a powerful catalyst for critical thinking. The alternate viewpoints and questioning of “official” narratives encourages people to thoroughly evaluate information in a more critical manner. The deep dive into complex issues is somewhat impressive no matter how outlandish the results are.

It is interesting that these theories often only come to light in the absence of comprehensive information. When faced with uncertainty or in some cases when given an answer people are unhappy with, the search for alternative theories and explanations begin. Once these theories have been formed, in my experience it is very hard to the change the mind of a believer even with the aid of scientific evidence (after-all science is just another mainstream medium…
