So, the proxy wars of the last cold war were nothing then? There’s a lot of escalation that can happen before fingers actually go near the nuclear trigger. Antagonism with Russia is good for the US and it’s good for Europe. It’s good for the US, because it gives Europe incentives to turn to them for trade over, say, China, and it’s good for Europe because they get a nuclear umbrella without having to actually spend money on building and maintaining a nuclear arsenal, which isn’t likely to happen anyway thanks to international treaties.

It’s also not like any “ceasefire” by the West in Syria is going to stop people dying there
