BMW M5 Sets Two World Records for Drifting

BMW used all of the 2018 M5’s 600 hp to set two world records for yaw addled driving.

First, the record for “greatest distance vehicle drift in 8 hours” was shattered by BMW driving instructor Johan Schwartz who drifted the new M5 for eight hours straight or 232.5 miles around a skid pad. Schwartz beat the old record by 143 miles and in doing so reclaimed the record he first set back in 2013.

The second was “longest twin vehicle drift (water assisted),” and was a direct result of the first record. Drifting for 8 hours means the M5 would need to refuel, so instead of stopping for gas, BMW invented a car-to-car dry-break refueling system which would allow another M5 to tandem drift with the first M5 in order to refill the tank without stopping.

It was inspired by the dry-break refueling systems used by fighter jets, the M5 was topped up five times during the eight-hour drift-a-thon.
