She is quite simply a wonderfully-written character brought to life by an astonishingly good performance.
The Force Awakens

She feels to me like a really new kind of female character — something totally refreshing and actually pretty startling to have come out of the hollywood machine. They seem to have avoided all the “strong woman in scifi aka Ripley” tropes while also avoiding all the 1970/1980s tropes that gave us “walking carpet.” I’m no feminist critic but Rey’s character, and the portrayal of women in general, made me feel good about watching this film with my daughter.
