As a part of professional development week at Leeds Trinity University students have to a variety of different talks to learn more about the industry that you would like to work in.At the start of the week on the Monday, i started the talks off with going to the interview skills talk. This talk helped remind me of how to prepare myself for future interviews. The lecturer talked about some of the interviews that i could possibly get such as phone and skype interviews and he also talked about the personal and competent questions that i could be asked such as“ what was one thing that was challenging for you and how did you overcome this?”

The second talk that i went to was run by Declan Wilson from the BBC.Declan Wilson works in the newgathering department of the BBC and right now runs the Korean Website for the BBC that allows people in North and South Korea to be able to have access to topics that are not as widely talked about in their country. This is broadcasted to them in a variety of different ways such as through the use of radio. The BBC having a webpage for south korea is important because media is widely censored and controlled by the government which means that people make their homemade radios to listen to the BBC.In the talk he also talked about some of attributes that you need to have to work in that job role such as how honestly is the best policy and how you should always seek feedback. He also mentioned the importance personal sacrifice in that job.

The last talk i went to was from Melanie Green,Melanie green is a Digital Engagement and Communications Manager for It Cosmetics that is a part of L’Oreal. She started by getting an internship at Selfridges before working her way up to becoming a PR executive. Some of the aspects she talked about was how to make yourself employable which i will detail below.Another aspect she talked about was how she created opportunities for herself in the industry rather than just waiting for opportunities to arise. Some of her priorities in her job is to create content and host events to bring more brand awareness to the company. She also works with influencers to try and get them to promote her product more. Some of her tips on how to make yourself more employable are:

  • Network yourself
  • Gain as much experience as possible
  • Upskill yourself
  • Good attitude
  • Gain experience through the job that you are doing now.

From the talks that i went to during the week,I learned that it is important for me to learnt to adapt to phone interviews better by trialing it more with my friends to make myself become more confident .From the talk with Declan Wilson from the BBC i learned that it is important to personal sacrfrice events and occasions for the job that i want to be in because it will allow me to progress to a better position in the media industry quicker and get me where i would like to be in a few years time.

The last thing i learned from the talk with Melaine Green was the importance of networking.Melanie Green put herself out there to people by making connections at events and using them to her advantage when she was looking for new opportunities which allowed her to get to the position that she is today. The talk by Melanie Green was the most influencial talk that i had this week as it was an area in the industry that i would like to go into.
