FRED JONES TO HOST OSCAR BROUSSE JACOBSON LECTURE

Norman, Okla., February 26, 2015 — The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art will host a public lecture for the museum’s new exhibition, A World Unconquered: The Art of Oscar Brousse Jacobson, at 7 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 26, in the Mary Eddy and Fred Jones Auditorium followed by a complimentary public reception.

Mark White, the Interim Director and Eugene B. Adkins Curator of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, will present the lecture, which will commemorate the centennial year of Jacobson joining OU’s art faculty. In his lifetime, Jacobson created more than 600 works, 50 of which will be on display in the exhibition. It will also include certain works that Jacobson acquired for the museum while he was on the faculty.

The lecture will describe Jacobson’s evolution as a painter, from his days as Birger Sandzén’s mentee and his early Van Gogh-influenced works, to his days traveling the American West searching for an untouched place to capture.

The title of the exhibition, A World Unconquered, chosen by White, is based on a quote from Jacobson written in 1948 which says, ““It may now be considered old fashioned but I seem to prefer to paint the world unconquered by man, unviolated by human greed, a world untouched by misery and despair.”

“Oscar Jacobson’s work inspired me. As an a Native American, he makes me proud of my culture,” Tori Ross, sophomore said.

The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is in the OU Arts District of the Norman campus on the corner of Elm Avenue and Boyd Street, at 555 Elm Ave. Admission to this event is complimentary. For more information call (405) 325–4938 or visit www.ou.edu/fjjma.
