5 Minutes with….The Little Style House
Mum of 2 Anna was struggling to find more gender neutral clothing for her daughter so she decided to create her own! Read more about her journey into starting her own business below…
What inspired the creation of The Little Style House? I created The Little Style House in April 2016 after getting frustrated of seeing the same stereotypical and gender specific styles of children’s fashion in the high street shops. My daughter, now 3 is not a typical princess girly girl and so I wanted her clothes to reflect her personality. Previous to starting the business, I worked for an international law firm — a very different environment to the one I’m working in now. I live in Nottingham (have done all my life) with my husband, daughter Amber and 16 year old son Alex.
What does a typical day look like for you? Never a dull moment at The Little Style House HQ! Early start (Amber is a very early riser! Alex isn’t!) and a mad rush to get out the house for school drop off. Back home where I do a quick tidy up, prepare dinner etc and then up to my office to start work. I love this business so much as my days are so varied, one day I could be working on my website for design changes or improvements, or I could be sourcing fabric (my favourite part), getting my head around marketing or laying out all the beautiful fabric and having a morning of pattern cutting. Then it’s back to Mum role and doing tea, helping with homework (urgh — GCSE’s!). The evening will probably end with wine and Netflix.
What’s been the most challenging part of running your own business so far? There aren’t enough hours in the day!
Best piece of advice you’ve received as a mum? I really struggled with breastfeeding my daughter and so the best piece of advice came from my mum (who was a midwife) during an emotional phone conversation where she said “get those bottles sterilized, I’ll be round in half an hour with some formula!” The relief was immense.
What’s next for The Little Style House? I will be taking TLSH pop up shop along to a lot local events over the next 6 months. I will also be at The Lark in The Park in West Bridgford which is a fantastic free family day out in August. My range is also being stocked in two Nottingham gift shops (all top secret at the moment!) which I’m thrilled about and there are some collaborations with mummy websites and bloggers in the pipeline too! Long term aims for the business are to continue as I am whilst Amber is still small with a view to hopefully scaling up and opening a boutique in the future.
Huge thanks to Anna for a lovely interview, this sounds like such a magical, if tricky, job!
