There is a lot to say about this subject and as someone who dedicated his last few years to learning and coming up with solutions to the problem I can say one thing - steaming is not a bad thing, the business models and (lack of) innovation around it are problematic.
Streaming is the new way to play tracks, the only thing streaming services do is playing tracks, similarly to the conventional radio they allow a static/passive listening experience that doesn’t worth much - especially to the avid music fan (which is the one that cares enough to actually pay for music). This, my friend, is a problem.
For the true music fan, music was always more than just tracks, it was an experience, a research, a collection, a discussion and it had a strong social aspect to it that was worth paying for. The conventional streaming platforms are a one way street - the discussion is non existing, it is only a way to discover music.
The future is not so bad as it seems though. As I mentioned streaming is just the beginning. Just as the music industry started with radio first, then home record players, record stores etc. I believe the same will happen on the web. Soon we’ll start seeing tech companies and artists innovate and create experiences that are worth much more than those flat playlists the current streaming services limit us to.
