Hawaiian Airlines allows the traveling of children between 5–12 years unaccompanied under certain terms and conditions as decried under the Hawaiian Airlines Minor Policy. This policy by Hawaiian Airlines does not apply to children above the age of 12. However, children within the frame of 5–11 years traveling unaccompanied will have to follow certain terms and conditions as part of unaccompanied minors of Hawaiian Airlines.

The Hawaiian Airlines Minor Policy

Hawaiian Airlines has the following terms and conditions concerning the travel of children between the age group of 0–12.

  • Depending on their age, children are classified under the following category
  • Infants: Children between the ages of 0 and 4 years will be under the category of infants. These children cannot travel unaccompanied. Either parents or guardians need to accompany them.
  • Children between 5–12: Kids under these categories will be considered minors who can travel alone only as a part of the unaccompanied minor program.
  • Children above 12: Youngsters in these groups can travel unaccompanied. However, certain terms and conditions are still applicable to these children. However, on an international flight, they need to accompanied by an adult who must be at least 18 years of age.

Hawaiian Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Program Fee

Children traveling under the unaccompanied minor program need to pay an additional fee along with the individual ticketing. This unaccompanied minor fee will vary depending on the route. For travel within the state of Hawaii, the charges will be USD 35 in addition to the price of the ticket. For the travel between the USA and Hawaii, this additional fee is USD 100.

Certain rules and regulations are applicable while traveling unaccompanied

Children traveling unaccompanied needs to be escorted by a parent guardian or other known responsible person. The person escorting the minor will be provided the gate pass and needs to remain there at the gates until the flight has departed. Similarly, a person needs to be present at the arrival airport to pick up the person.

Under the following conditions, the airline has the right to refuse the unaccompanied minor to board the flight:

  • In case the airline doubts that there is a certain possibility that the flight could be diverted to another destination.
  • If there is a certain possibility that the unaccompanied might not be able to catch up to the next segment of the connecting flight.
  • The airlines will not accept any unaccompanied minor on a flight departing between 9 PM and 5 AM unless the given flight is the only remaining flight of the day.
  • In case of a connecting flight, the next segment of the flight should be the last flight of the day to the destination.
  • Unaccompanied minors cannot request an overnight stay.
  • Hawaiian Airlines will not accept any unaccompanied for a trip comprising of a flight from any other airline whether it is connecting or otherwise.

Hawaiian Airlines Policy for Accompanied Minor

Children between 5 -and 11 can travel as a part of unaccompanied minors or need to be accompanied by an adult age who should not be less than 15.

Hawaiian Airlines Policy for Infants

Children below 5 years come under two categories i.e. below or above 2 years of age. Concerning the travel of infants with Hawaiin Airlines, the following terms and conditions will be applicable

  • Children below 7 days cannot travel on an airplane unless there is documentation by a physician approving the same. The accompanying person for these children should be at least 18 years old.
  • The children below the age of 2 are considered as infants. No charges are implicated by the airlines on the travel of these children until they are traveling on the lap of the parent of whoever is accommodating them. The condition to take in fact is that the person should be at least 15 years of age. Lap children while traveling on a North American or domestic flight can travel for free. However, on an international flight they will be charged 10% of the adult fare.
  • For one accompanied adult, one child is permitted.
  • Children between the ages of 2 and 4 will be charged the same prices as those of an adult.

In case a seat has been purchased for children under the age of 2, then the fare will be applicable which will be full fare in case of an international flight. However, on a domestic flight, seat fare will be between 67%-75% of the adult fare.

Necessary Documents to be submitted in case of an Unaccompanied Minor

The airlines will mention the necessary documents to be submitted by the passenger during the time of booking. Some mandatory documents that might be required on any unaccompanied journey include:

  • Passport (in case of international)
  • Identification Proof
  • Document representing information of parents, guardian including their contact details.
  • Details of the alternate person in case the accompanying person at the airport or the parent cannot be contacted.

While a normal booking or one comprising an accompanying person, the journey can be booked easily through the official website. However, in the case of unaccompanied minors, it is advisable for the passengers to connect with a live person through the Hawaiian Airlines helpline number only after which they can proceed to make a reservation for the unaccompanied.

Make sure you ask for the necessary documents without which the journey cannot be booked or even the booked one can be cancelled.
