The Tibet Entry Permit (TEP) is an official document granted by the Chinese government that authorizes international visitors to journey to specific regions in Tibet, which are inaccessible to foreigners. It is commonly referred to as the Tibet Travel Permit, and it is mandatory for tourists to possess it before entering Tibet. Tourists cannot apply for the permit independently, and it is usually secured by a travel agent or a tour company. To acquire the permit, tourists must submit various documents such as their passport, visa, and travel schedule, among other requirements.

A Tibet group visa is a type of visa that allows foreign travellers to enter Tibet as part of a group tour. This visa is issued by the Chinese government and is only valid for travel to Tibet. The group visa is issued to the entire group and not to individuals, and all members of the group must enter and exit Tibet together. This visa is required for all foreign travellers who wish to visit Tibet, as independent travel to Tibet is not allowed.

Here are the steps to apply for a Tibet Travel Permit:

  1. Select a Tibet Tour Operator: Independent travel by foreign tourists in Tibet is prohibited, and they must use the services of a tour operator. Choose a trustworthy and licensed operator that can assist you in obtaining the necessary permits.
  2. Provide Essential Papers: Once you have finalized a tour operator, you will be required to furnish a copy of your passport and Chinese visa. The Chinese visa should be valid for a minimum of 3 months.
  3. Tour Schedule and Confirmation: Following the submission of your documents and itinerary, your tour operator will confirm your tour and itinerary.
  4. Acquire the Tibet Travel Authorization: The tour operator will apply for your Tibet Travel Authorization through the Tibet Tourism Bureau. Typically, it takes 7–8 working days to obtain the authorization.
  5. Collect the Authorization: Once the authorization is granted, the tour operator will send it to your hotel in mainland China. You must personally retrieve the authorization with your original passport. Please note that the Tibet Travel Authorization is only valid for travel in specific parts of Tibet and is not a visa. You must also procure a Chinese visa to enter Tibet.
